The main difference is the type of music you will be playing. If you are referring to this instrument as " a violin" the music is mainly classical or jazz music. If you are referring to this instrument as "a fiddle" the music is mainly traditional genres, folk, Irish, bluegrass, Old Time, etc.

The changeable difference between a violin and fiddle would be the "set up". This consists of the strings, tuners, the bridge, shoulder rests, chin rests, or pick ups.
